About our league

The LANS Volleyball League is a non-profit, co-ed, adult (18+) league that started in 1983 as a way for Lutheran Adults and Nursing Staff (LANS) to get together for evenings of fun and fellowship. Over the years the league has diversified beyond the original intent, becoming inclusive to all players, regardless of religious or professional affiliation.  The league has expanded and developed into one of the regions best valued, recreational adult volleyball leagues.

We play solely on Tuesday evenings at gyms throughout Kitchener-Waterloo, from 7:30-10:30pm.  Three teams will be assigned to a gym each evening. Teams will play six games per night, and referee three games per night. OVA referees are brought in for playoffs. The season typically runs from the end of September until the end of April; 24 weeks of play, plus playoffs. Every six weeks, the top team from each division will move up a division, and the bottom team will move down.

With respect to game play, we play reverse six volleyball, and follow Volleyball Canada's Rulebook for most rules.  (There are a few unique rules to LANS to accommodate for the fact that we play in school gyms, and not official courts.)

We typically have four divisions of play, but this could be adjusted, depending on the number of teams that register for the season. Our divisions can be thought of as:

A= Very competitive; experienced players; all consistently block and hit well
B= Competitive; skilled players; most on team block and hit well
C= Semi-competitive; knowledgeable players; some on team will block and hit well
D= Recreational; know the game and rules, but not as much blocking and hitting
